Courthouse in Lockhart, Texas
What’s in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet;
Let’s discuss our name: Caldwell County BBQ.
While we were getting the restaurant started, we noted a recurring mistake in the use of our name. We were commonly called:
- Caldwell C-o-u-n-t-R-y BBQ, instead of
- Caldwell C-o-u-n-t-y BBQ (no R)
Now when all is said and done, we just want you to come eat our BBQ. We are not going to kick you out of the restaurant for calling us the wrong name. But we thought maybe a little history lesson would be in order.
The restaurant is owned by Clay and Susan Caldwell. So, the Caldwell part is easy to remember. But did you know the BBQ capital of Texas is Lockhart, Texas? Lockhart is the home of several world-famous BBQ restaurants:
- Black’s BBQ
- Smitty’s Market
- Kreuz Market, and
- Chisholm Trail BBQ
On May 26, 1999 House Resolution #1024 was adopted by the 76th Texas Legislature naming Lockhart the “Barbecue Capital of Texas”, then by the Senate in the Fall of 2003. Well, the plot thickens. Lockhart, Texas happens to be located in none other than (drum roll, please):
- CALDWELL COUNTY
Are you getting the connections here? We hope so. Sooo, the next time you hear someone talking about a new BBQ restaurant called Caldwell CountRy BBQ, we hope you help us out and make the correction.
